Williston State Falls to Gillette, 80–73, in Hard-Fought Wednesday Battle
Williston, N.D. — Despite a 35-point explosion from star guard Josiah McDonald, the Williston State College men's basketball team came up just short Wednesday night, falling 80–73 to Gillette College in a high-energy, back-and-forth contest.
McDonald carried the Tetons offensively, logging 38 minutes and shooting 10-for-31 from the field while knocking down four threes and an impressive 11-of-12 from the free-throw line. His relentless scoring kept Williston State within striking distance throughout, but Gillette's superior rebounding and balanced bench production ultimately proved too much.
A Dominant Night on the Glass for Gillette
Gillette controlled the interior from the start, outrebounding Williston State 48–35, including 16 offensive boards that led to critical second-chance points. Forward Rashad McCormick was the catalyst, delivering a monster double-double with 28 points and 15 rebounds while hitting four three-pointers. His presence on both ends of the floor set the tone for Gillette's physical style of play.
Starting center Jada Bolok added 7 points and 12 rebounds, and reserve big Aly Tapo pulled down six more boards, giving Gillette consistent size and energy inside.
Williston State Shows Grit but Struggles from Deep
While McDonald provided fireworks, the rest of the Tetons struggled to find offensive rhythm, shooting just 35.6% from the field and 25.8% from three as a team.
Carson Haerer chipped in 15 points, knocking down a pair of threes, and Eden Hobbs delivered a strong all-around performance with 15 points, 5 rebounds, and a steal. Freshman forward Andrew Sauer provided helpful minutes off the bench, scoring 5 points and grabbing 7 rebounds, but the Tetons couldn't generate enough consistent scoring to overcome Gillette's interior dominance.
Turnovers also proved costly, with Williston State committing 12 giveaways, some at crucial moments as they attempted to rally late in the second half.
Gillette's Balanced Attack Closes the Door
Though McCormick led the way, Gillette benefited from several key supporting performances. Guard Sayed Sayed added 16 points on efficient drives and mid-range shots, and reserve guard Jaden Smith went a perfect 8-for-8 from the free-throw line to finish with 12 points.
Gillette shot 79.2% from the stripe, converting 19 of 24 attempts—an edge that mattered in a game where Williston State fought to keep the score within single digits.
