Tetons’ Historic Season Comes to a Close at NJCAA National Tournament
LAKE CHARLES, La. — The Williston State College women's basketball team saw its remarkable 2025–26 season come to an end at the NJCAA Division I Women's Basketball National Tournament, falling 54–50 to Hutchinson Community College on Tuesday in Lake Charles, Louisiana.
The Tetons conclude the season with an outstanding 32–2 record, marking one of the most successful campaigns in program history and further cementing the tradition-rich legacy of Williston State women's basketball.
Despite a hard-fought defensive battle, Williston State struggled to find consistent offensive rhythm, shooting 33.9% from the field and 16.7% from beyond the arc. The Tetons held Hutchinson to just 35% shooting but were ultimately undone by a rebounding deficit and turnovers down the stretch.
Sophomore standout Leila Heffernan led the way for the Tetons with 22 points on 10-of-21 shooting, adding seven rebounds, three assists, and three blocks in a strong all-around performance. Dani Jordan chipped in 11 points and six rebounds, while Jersey Berg contributed nine rebounds and seven points.
Williston State's defense kept the game within reach throughout, forcing 18 turnovers and recording nine steals and five blocks as a team. However, Hutchinson's advantage on the glass (43–32), led by KaMyra Barber's dominant 17-rebound effort, proved to be the difference.
Trailing late, the Tetons battled back to make it a one-possession game in the final minutes, but were unable to convert key opportunities as time expired.
While the loss marks a disappointing end, it does little to overshadow a historic season defined by consistency, resilience, and excellence. The Tetons' 32 wins rank among the best in program history and reflect the standard of success that continues to define Williston State basketball.
With a deep postseason run and national tournament appearance, the Tetons have once again demonstrated why they remain one of the premier programs in junior college basketball.
