North Central District Preview
The Williston State Tetons will play for a spot in the national tournament Saturday evening when they travel to face Triton College Trojans in the North Central District Championship.
The winner of the matchup advances to the NJCAA Division I Women's Basketball Championship. Tipoff is scheduled for 5:00 p.m. CT on March 14 in River Grove.
Tetons seek national berth after dominant season
Williston State enters the district title game with a 31-1 record, riding one of the most successful seasons in program history. The Tetons have built their success around a balanced, high-powered offense that averages 91.9 points per game while shooting 48.8 percent from the field and 34 percent from three-point range.
Sophomore guard Taylah Murtagh leads the Tetons in scoring at 18.7 points per game while knocking down 3.0 three-pointers per contest. She is joined in double figures by forward Jersey Berg, who averages 17.1 points per game on 53.6 percent shooting, and freshman forward Leila Heffernan with 14.9 points per game while shooting nearly 60 percent from the field.
Freshman guard Dani Jordan also provides a major scoring boost at 13.5 points per game, while sophomore forward Lucia Bellido adds 10.0 points per contest off the bench.
The Tetons' depth has been a key factor throughout the season, with multiple players capable of contributing offensively. Guards Sophie Barker and Kylie Simpson help stretch the floor from the perimeter, while the frontcourt combination of Berg and Heffernan anchors the interior scoring.
Triton powered by high-scoring backcourt
Triton enters the district championship at 24-9, led by one of the top scorers in the region. Guard Jayla Rankin averages 19.2 points per game and has made 80 three-pointers this season, giving the Trojans a dangerous perimeter threat.
Forward Jazzmine Smith provides interior production with 13.1 points and 6.6 rebounds per game, while guard Jada Branch adds 10.9 points per contest.
Inside, Triton relies heavily on its rebounding duo of Alivia Brown and Charity Anderson. The pair combine for more than 16 rebounds per game, giving the Trojans a strong presence on the glass and helping fuel second-chance opportunities.
Matchup to watch
Saturday's contest could come down to tempo. Williston State thrives in an up-tempo system, averaging nearly 92 points per game, while Triton averages 73.6 points and relies more heavily on its half-court scoring and rebounding advantage.
Containing Rankin on the perimeter will be a priority for the Tetons' defense, while Triton will need to slow down a Williston State offense that features five players averaging at least eight points per game.
With a national tournament berth on the line, both teams will be looking to extend their seasons in what promises to be a high-stakes district championship showdown in River Grove.
