Williston State Rolls Past UTTC, Improves to 26-1 on Season
WILLISTON, N.D. — The Williston State College women's basketball team continued its dominant season performance with a commanding 102-66 victory over United Tribes Technical College, securing its 26th win of the year and improving to an impressive 26-1 overall.
The Tetons showcased their depth and efficiency on both ends of the floor, shooting 50.7 percent from the field and placing five players in double figures as they pulled away from UTTC early and never looked back.
Sophomore standout Leila Heffernan led the charge with a dominant performance in the paint, pouring in a game-high 28 points on 10-of-18 shooting. Heffernan was nearly unstoppable inside, adding 14 rebounds to record a double-double while also contributing four assists and a block. She was perfect from the free-throw line, going 6-for-6.
Dani Jordan added 20 points in a strong all-around effort. Jordan knocked down three 3-pointers and went 7-of-9 from the line while pulling down 10 rebounds for a double-double of her own.
Sharpshooter Taylah Murtagh contributed 17 points, connecting on three shots from beyond the arc, while Lucia Bellido provided a huge spark off the bench with 16 points on an efficient 7-of-11 shooting performance, including 2-of-3 from deep.
Williston State controlled the glass throughout the contest, out-rebounding UTTC 50-29. The Tetons also shared the basketball effectively, finishing with 21 assists on 35 made field goals. Sophie Barker facilitated the offense with six assists to go along with nine points and nine rebounds, narrowly missing a double-double.
United Tribes was led by Ronessa Sazue, who scored 19 points and grabbed eight rebounds. Sapphire Lablanc added 18 points, including four 3-pointers. However, UTTC struggled to find consistent offense, shooting just 29.6 percent from the field and 22.6 percent from three-point range.
Williston State's defensive pressure forced 17 turnovers and limited UTTC's second-chance opportunities despite the visitors' efforts at the free-throw line, where they shot 77.3 percent.
The Tetons' balanced attack and defensive intensity once again proved to be the difference as they continue to build momentum heading into the final stretch of the season. With a 26-1 record, Williston State remains one of the top teams in the region and shows no signs of slowing down.
