Women's Basketball goes 1-1 in Devils Lake
DEVILS LAKE, N.D. — The Williston State College women's basketball team came away from the Lake Region Classic with a 1-1 record this past weekend, dominating Minnesota North College–Vermilion 113–31 on Friday before narrowly falling 71–67 to North Iowa Area Community College on Saturday.
Tetons Dominate in Record-Breaking Win Over Vermilion
The Tetons opened the weekend with a statement performance, overwhelming Vermilion from start to finish. Williston State's offensive efficiency and defensive pressure were on full display as they shot 50.6% from the field and forced 46 turnovers.
Freshman Dani Jordan led the charge with 19 points and nine rebounds off the bench, while Taylah Murtagh filled the stat sheet with 16 points, five rebounds, and five assists. Kylie Simpson added 14 points and five assists, and Leila Heffernan contributed 12 points and six boards.
The Tetons' depth proved to be their biggest advantage — 10 players scored, and the team combined for a staggering 33 assists and 26 steals. Williston's bench outscored Vermilion's reserves 64–19.
Vermilion struggled to find any rhythm offensively, shooting just 22.6% from the field and 9.5% from three-point range. The Tetons led 58–10 at halftime and never looked back.
Heartbreaker Against NIACC
Saturday's matchup against a strong North Iowa Area CC (NIACC) team was a different story. Despite a hard-fought effort, the Tetons came up just short in a 71–67 loss.
Leila Heffernan turned in an impressive performance with 18 points, seven rebounds, and five steals, while Kylie Simpson added 16 points and six assists. Jersey Berg recorded a near double-double with 12 points and eight rebounds, and Lucia Bellido chipped in eight points and five rebounds.
The Tetons shot 39.4% from the floor but struggled from long range, hitting just 2-of-20 from beyond the arc. Turnovers proved costly as well — Williston committed 15 to NIACC's 10.
NIACC's Reggi Spotts and Peyton Meincke combined for 36 points to pace the Trojans, who capitalized on timely three-pointers and second-chance opportunities to seal the win.
